Austria 3-1 Jordan: 37-year-old Arnautovic seals a 36-year wait
Romano Schmid's long-range opener and a Yazan Al-Arab own goal put Austria in control before Marko Arnautovic's stoppage-time penalty closed out their first World Cup win since 1990, with Ali Olwan's strike marking Jordan's first-ever goal at a finals.
Austria ended a 36-year wait for a World Cup victory, edging tournament debutants Jordan 3-1 in front of 68,527 at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium (Levi's Stadium) in Santa Clara. It was a result that flattered neither side until a chaotic finish, but it sends Austria into their Group J campaign with three points on the board.
Schmid strikes from distance
Austria led just past the 20-minute mark when Romano Schmid let fly from outside the box, becoming the first Austria player to score from range at a World Cup since Ivica Vastic against Chile in 1998. The lead held to the interval, but Jordan refused to fade.
Jordan write history
Around the break, Ali Olwan struck to make it 1-1 and write Jordan's name into the record books with the nation's first-ever goal at a FIFA World Cup. The debutants had their moment, and for a spell the contest was level and open.
Austria find a way late
The decisive twist came in the 76th minute, when Jordan's Yazan Al-Arab turned the ball into his own net to restore Austria's lead at 2-1. Austria thought they had a third through Marko Arnautovic, but the goal was ruled out by VAR for a handball by Stefan Posch in the build-up. There was no denying Arnautovic from the spot, though: after VAR confirmed a handball by Jordan's Saleem Obaid deep into stoppage time, the veteran converted in the 90+12th minute. At 37 years and 59 days, Arnautovic became Austria's oldest player at a World Cup, surpassing Michael Konsel, and is reported as the country's oldest World Cup scorer. Marcel Sabitzer's 77th-minute booking for unsporting behaviour was a footnote on a frantic afternoon.
What it means for Group J
Three points and a winning start change the math early in Group J. Austria did the hard part on the day, but the schedule does them no favours: next up are holders Argentina, a fixture that will tell us far more about how far this side can go. Jordan, beaten but unbowed on their World Cup debut, can take heart from Olwan's historic strike and a performance that pushed Austria to the brink.
