Saudi Arabia 1-1 Uruguay: Al-Owais the hero as Araújo rescues Uruguay late
Abdulelah Al-Amri's goal had Saudi Arabia dreaming of an upset in Miami, but Maxi Araújo's late strike spared Bielsa's Uruguay — after a heroic display from keeper Mohammed Al-Owais.
Uruguay needed a late goal to avoid a damaging defeat, drawing 1-1 with Saudi Arabia at a packed Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. Marcelo Bielsa's side dominated the ball and the chances but ran into an inspired goalkeeper.
Saudi Arabia lead, then dig in
Abdulelah Al-Amri put Saudi Arabia ahead in the first half, pouncing on a rebound spilled by Fernando Muslera. From there the underdogs defended in numbers, and goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais produced save after save to protect the lead — the standout performer on the night.
Araújo levels late
Uruguay's pressure was relentless — 28 shots and 1.54 expected goals to Saudi Arabia's seven attempts — but the breakthrough took time. Fittingly, it came from another rebound, Maxi Araújo following up to level the match and rescue a point for the South Americans.
What it means for Group H
With Spain held 0-0 by Cape Verde in the group's other opener, all four Group H teams are level on a single point. Uruguay remain favourites to advance but will know they were second best for long spells. Revisit the game on the match page or see the full schedule at matches.
