Curaçao at World Cup 2026: The Smallest Nation Ever to Make It
A 156,000-strong Caribbean island drew with Jamaica to top its group — and now it lands in Group E with Germany, Ecuador and Ivory Coast.
When Curaçao held Jamaica to a 0-0 draw in Kingston on 18 November 2025, the Caribbean island did something no country had ever done: it became the smallest nation by population ever to reach a World Cup. With roughly 156,000 people on a 444 km² island, Curaçao bettered Iceland's 2018 mark of around 350,000 — a record confirmed by CNN and FIFA. The route there was no fluke. Curaçao topped CONCACAF's third-round Group B unbeaten — seven wins and three draws over the campaign — finishing ahead of Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and Bermuda, as Al Jazeera detailed. The decider in Jamaica was pure nerve: needing only a draw, they defended for their lives, rode a stoppage-time VAR review and held firm for the goalless result that sent them through. Much of the squad is a Dutch-Caribbean diaspora project. Tahith Chong, a Manchester United academy product now at Sheffield United, anchors the midfield alongside Juninho Bacuna, while Rangelo Janga is the country's all-time top scorer and Gervane Kastaneer led the qualifying charts. On the bench sits 78-year-old Dick Advocaat — the former Netherlands, South Korea and Russia boss — set to become the oldest manager in World Cup history. The draw, however, is unforgiving. In Group E, Curaçao open against four-time world champions Germany in Houston before facing a tough, well-drilled Ecuador in Kansas City and an athletic Ivory Coast side in Philadelphia.
