2026 World Cup predictions: who our AI model says will win

Most "predictions" you read are opinion. Ours are output. Cup26 AI runs a statistical model — not a chatbot guess — that rates every nation, simulates the entire 48-team bracket from the group stage to the final ten thousand times, and counts how often each team lifts the trophy. As of late May 2026, Spain comes out on top, narrowly ahead of holders Argentina, with France a clear third. The full board is below, and it updates as new results come in.

How the model works, briefly. Each team carries an Elo strength rating, recalibrated on 920 real international matches from the last two years, so recent form actually moves the numbers. Match scorelines are drawn from a Dixon-Coles bivariate Poisson model — the standard in football analytics for capturing low-scoring, correlated results — and the whole tournament is then played out 10,000 times by Monte Carlo simulation. The percentages you see are simply how often each outcome happened across those simulations.

A few things stand out. Spain's depth and current form make it the model's favourite, but Argentina sits within touching distance — the gap at the top is small. France leads the next tier. The model is notably cooler on Brazil than the betting markets are: recent losses dragged its calibrated rating down, so it lands fifth rather than challenging for favouritism. Among the outsiders, Morocco — semifinalists in 2022 — Colombia, Croatia and Japan all carry more weight than their fame suggests, and they are the dark horses worth watching.
