World Cup 2026 Debutants: The 4 First-Time Teams

Cape Verde, Curaçao, Jordan and Uzbekistan reach a World Cup for the first time ever. The 48-team expansion opened the door — here is how each got there and what to expect.

For the first time in history, the FIFA World Cup will feature 48 teams when it kicks off across the USA, Mexico and Canada on June 11, 2026. The bigger field — up from 32 — handed extra qualifying slots to every confederation, and four nations seized the moment to reach the finals for the very first time. Meet the World Cup 2026 debutants: Cape Verde, Curaçao, Jordan and Uzbekistan.

These are the only four confirmed first-time teams. Each story is different — an Atlantic archipelago of half a million people, the smallest nation ever to qualify, a Middle Eastern side fresh off a continental final, and Central Asia's pioneers led by a World Cup-winning captain. Below we break down how each qualified, who to watch, and what is realistic in their group.

Cape Verde — the Blue Sharks

Cape Verde (Cabo Verde) topped CAF Group D ahead of Cameroon and sealed qualification on October 13, 2025 with a 3-0 win over Eswatini. With a population of roughly 525,000, the Blue Sharks became the third-smallest nation ever to reach a World Cup, behind only Curaçao and Iceland. Veteran coach Pedro "Bubista" Brito, who guided the islanders to two Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals, was named CAF Coach of the Year for 2025.

Watch winger Garry Rodrigues, captain Ryan Mendes and defender Roberto "Pico" Lopes, who plays in Ireland. Drawn into a brutal Group H with Spain and Uruguay plus Saudi Arabia, advancing would be a monumental upset — but the expanded knockout format means even four of the best third-placed teams progress. Curaçao — the smallest nation ever to qualify

With about 156,000 inhabitants, the Caribbean island of Curaçao is now the smallest country by population ever to reach a World Cup. The team went unbeaten through CONCACAF qualifying and clinched its place with a disciplined goalless draw away to Jamaica in November 2025. Remarkably, the side is coached by 78-year-old Dutchman Dick Advocaat, a former Netherlands boss who became the oldest coach to lead a team to the finals.

Many players were born in the Netherlands and carry Dutch-club pedigree — winger Tahith Chong, plus the experienced Bacuna brothers and Kenji Gorré. Curaçao landed in Group E alongside Germany, Ecuador and Ivory Coast: a steep test, but simply being there is historic. See our Curaçao World Cup 2026 preview.

Jordan — finalists turned qualifiers

Jordan reached its first World Cup after a transformative cycle. The momentum came from a stunning run to the 2023 AFC Asian Cup final (lost to Qatar), and under Moroccan coach Jamal Sellami the team finished runner-up in AFC third-round Group B. Qualification was sealed in June 2025 with a 3-0 win over Oman, lit up by an Ali Olwan hat-trick.

The star is winger Musa Al-Taamari of French side Rennes — the first Jordanian to feature regularly in a top-five European league — supported by forwards Yazan Al-Naimat and Olwan. Jordan drew the toughest possible Group J, headlined by Argentina, with Austria and Algeria. Full breakdown in our Jordan World Cup 2026 preview.

Uzbekistan — Central Asia's pioneers

Uzbekistan ended a decades-long wait to become the first Central Asian nation at a World Cup. They sealed it on June 5, 2025 with a goalless draw against the United Arab Emirates, finishing ahead of established sides in AFC qualifying under Timur Kapadze. In October 2025 the federation made a statement hire: Italy's 2006 World Cup-winning captain and Ballon d'Or winner Fabio Cannavaro now leads the team into the finals.

The headline name is Manchester City centre-back Abdukodir Khusanov, alongside captain and forward Eldor Shomurodov and rising talent Abbos Fayzullaev. Uzbekistan sit in Group K with Portugal, Colombia and DR Congo — a difficult draw, but a well-organised side capable of springing a surprise.

Why now? The 48-team door

None of this happens at 32 teams. The expansion added slots across Africa, Asia, CONCACAF and beyond, rewarding nations that had been knocking on the door for years. Whether any debutant can survive the group stage is the real intrigue — and you can test every scenario yourself.
