South Africa at the World Cup 2026: Can Bafana escape Group A?

South Africa are back at football's biggest stage for the first time since they hosted it in 2010, and they could hardly have been handed a louder return. Bafana Bafana will play the opening match of the 2026 World Cup against co-hosts Mexico on June 11 at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, a 87,000-seat cauldron that will be roaring for the home side. It is their fourth World Cup appearance overall, and a Group A draw alongside Mexico, South Korea and a returning Czechia gives Hugo Broos' young side a genuine, if difficult, path.

The road here was anything but smooth. South Africa topped a tight CAF qualifying group only after a late twist: FIFA docked them three points for fielding the suspended Teboho Mokoena against Lesotho, turning a win into a 3-0 forfeit and briefly handing the lead to Benin. Bafana settled it on the final matchday, beating Rwanda 3-0 while Benin collapsed 4-0 against Nigeria. It was the payoff for Broos' patient, youth-first rebuild since 2021 — a project the Belgian has said will be the final job of his long career.

The spine of this team is its experience in goal and its energy everywhere else. Captain Ronwen Williams — the Mamelodi Sundowns keeper who saved four penalties in a single AFCON shootout and was rated among the world's best at the 2024 Ballon d'Or — is the anchor. Burnley striker Lyle Foster carries the goal threat, Percy Tau brings tournament know-how, and Mokoena pulls the strings in midfield. Broos has leaned on a largely tried-and-tested 26 drawn heavily from Sundowns and Orlando Pirates, betting on chemistry over star power.
